Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, has left the board of Bluesky, a decentralized social network he helped initiate.
The announcement came as a surprise to many, with Bluesky only updating their website to reflect the change late Sunday evening. Dorsey indirectly confirmed his departure with a cryptic tweet, and called X, the platform formerly called Twitter, a “freedom platform.”
Bluesky was founded by Dorsey in 2019. It started as an internal project that aimed to create open-source infrastructure onto which Twitter could eventually transition.
However, by 2022, the project had evolved into an independent team. Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter that same year, Bluesky saw an influx of users. Dorsey was around this time still an active participant and the platform, until recently, was initially invite-only.

But to many on Bluesky, his departure from the board isn’t surprising. He deleted his account on the platform in September, which people read as the opposite of a vote of confidence. Reddit gossip says he hated it there and vice versa.
And while Dorsey was — and still is — very closely associated with the platform, he wasn’t involved in its day-to-day operations. That was more Jay Graber, Bluesky CEO and formerly a software engineer for the cryptocurrency Zcash.
Musk of course celebrated Dorsey’s endorsement. Dorsey, meanwhile announced a $5 million donation to Nostr, a crypto-adjacent social network that people on Reddit are now saying is his new favorite. The donation is part of a larger $21 million donation from his #startsmall charity. He also unfollowed all but three accounts on X, including Edward Snowden, Stella Assange, and Musk.
