Lithium production has begun at Lithium America’s (TSX: LAC) Cauchari-Olaroz project in Argentina. The firm this morning revealed that the first lithium carbonate has been produced at the project as it works to commission the mine.
“The initial production achieved as part of commissioning is an exciting step as Caucharí-Olaroz continues to advance toward first production of battery-quality lithium carbonate. Our dedicated and skilled teams continue to work diligently to progress this transformative project,” commented CEO and President Jonathan Evans.
The first lithium produced at the project is said to be lower than battery-grade, with the equipment necessary to produce the high grade lithium carbonate required for batteries not expected to be operational until some time in the second half of 2023. Additional purification equipment is required to achieve this level of quality.

With production underway the company will now begin to ramp production to a capacity of 40,000 tonnes per annum, which Lithium Americas has previously forecasted is expected to be accomplished in Q1 2024. During the ramp up stage, production and quality of the lithium produced is expected to be lower than nameplate capacities.
Lithium Americas last traded at $27.97 on the TSX.
