The US will impose a 100% tariff on branded or patented pharmaceuticals and add new 25% duties on heavy trucks, 50% levy on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, and 30% duties on upholstered furniture effective October 1, 2025, President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social.
Common in all announcements is the reason for the tariffs to be national security. On pharmaceuticals, Trump specified that the 100% duty will not apply if a company is “builidng” a US manufacturing plant, a term he defined as a project that has broken ground or is under construction.
For heavy trucks, the president said the 25% levy aims to “protect our Great Heavy Truck Manufacturers from unfair outside competition,” citing domestic brands such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, and Mack Trucks.

“We need our Truckers to be financially healthy and strong, for many reasons, but above all else, for National Security purposes!” Trump added.
For home-goods categories, Trump said the move addresses “large scale ‘FLOODING’” of these goods into the US market.
“It is a very unfair practice, but we must protect, for National Security and other reasons, our Manufacturing process,” he ended.
