Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) is recalling about 321,000 2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles in the United States due to some taillamps that may intermittently illuminate, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Saturday.
According to the filing, the issue, while so far rare, makes one or both taillamps intermittently illuminate due to a firmware anomaly that sends “false fault detections” during the car’s wakeup process. Brake lamps, backup lamps, and turn signal lamps are not affected by the issue.
Tesla noted three warranty reports and no accidents related to the issue. The company said that it will resolve the issue through an over-the-air (OTA) update that will correct the firmware anomaly causing the problem. Dealers were notified on November 17, while owners will be notified on January 14.

This recall was filed on the same day as an airbag-related callback that affects about 30,000 Model X 2021-2023 cars in the US. The NHTSA filing of the other recall cites a noncompliance issue with the front passenger airbag.
These are two of four recalls issued this month by the electric vehicle maker. It has had a total of 19 recall campaigns affecting 3.7 million vehicles in the US this year. While that number sounds like it’s 19 too many, Tesla is surprisingly among those with the fewest recall campaigns so far this year. That list is topped by Ford with 68.
Tesla last traded at $169.59 on the Nasdaq.
