Ontario MPP Removed From Caucus After Assault Charges

A first-term Ontario legislator was ousted from the governing Conservative caucus Monday following his weekend arrest on assault charges.

Chris Van Scott, 35, who represents Sault Ste. Marie, was taken into custody by Toronto authorities September 21 after Sault Ste. Marie detectives launched an investigation. He’s accused of assault and assault with a weapon in connection with a September 19 incident in the northern Ontario city.

According to court filings, the incident involved the alleged use of a high chair during an assault. No additional details were released about the circumstances surrounding the charges, which have yet to be proven in court.

When questioned by reporters Monday in Russell, Ontario, Premier Doug Ford confirmed the caucus change but directed inquiries elsewhere.

“Chris will be no longer sitting with our caucus,” Ford stated. “Go to the Sault Ste. Marie Police. I don’t want to interfere in a police investigation.”

Following a court proceeding Monday, the legislator secured conditional release. Among the restrictions: mandatory Toronto residence, a ban on weapons possession, and strict no-contact provisions requiring him to maintain at least 100 meters distance from specified individuals.

The MPP, who previously served as parliamentary assistant to Energy Minister Stephen Lecce, did not respond to attempts to reach him for comment. He will continue serving constituents as an independent member.

In February’s election, Scott narrowly captured the Sault Ste. Marie seat with a margin of fewer than 120 votes against New Democrat Lisa Vezeau-Allen. His political background includes serving from April 2023 through this past January as a special adviser in the premier’s office.

Opposition New Democrats are demanding Scott’s resignation from the legislature.
