Regime Change? Iran Just Doubled Down With Mojtaba Khamenei

Iran’s Assembly of Experts named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s third supreme leader on March 8, 2026, installing the 56-year-old son of the assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei just eight days into the US-Israeli military campaign aimed at toppling the Islamic Republic.

The 88-member clerical body announced the selection in a “decisive vote,” with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps quickly pledging full allegiance. The appointment hands Washington and Tel Aviv a direct answer to Operation Epic Fury’s central question — whether sustained bombardment could fracture the Iranian establishment. So far, the answer is no.

The process was far from clean. According to Iran International, IRGC commanders applied sustained pressure on Assembly members through repeated calls and in-person meetings to back Mojtaba Khamenei as early as March 3. One assembly member said Ali Khamenei himself had opposed his son’s succession and “never allowed this issue to be raised during his lifetime.” The IRGC’s weight proved decisive regardless.

Mojtaba Khamenei has never held elected office, has never delivered a public speech, and is largely unknown to ordinary Iranians. He holds only a mid-level clerical rank — a legitimacy gap critics flagged throughout the selection process. His real authority derives from decades inside the IRGC orbit: he served in the Iran-Iraq War, is linked to the violent suppression of the 2009 Green Movement protests, and has been tied by analysts to the most ideologically hardline factions of the Iranian security establishment.

Analysts expect him to lean more heavily on the IRGC than his father did and show little appetite for negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reinforced that posture on March 8, telling NBC’s Meet the Press that Iran needs “to continue fighting for the sake of our people.”

Trump had explicitly opposed the appointment, saying that “Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me” and warning the new leader would “not last long” without Washington’s approval. The Israeli Defense Forces designated any successor to Ali Khamenei a legitimate military target before the announcement was even made.

At least 1,332 people have been killed inside Iran since strikes began on February 28, according to Iranian state media. The US has lost eight service members in combat.
