Former President Donald Trump’s allies are lining up to kiss the hand.
David Bossie, a Maryland committeeman for the Republican National Committee (RNC) and a close ally of Donald Trump, has initiated a draft resolution that proposes declaring Trump as the presumptive Republican nominee even as the primaries have just started.
This proposal comes amidst Nikki Haley’s vigorous campaign efforts against Trump, who remains the frontrunner in the race. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has echoed the sentiment of uniting behind Trump, especially after his win over Haley in the New Hampshire primary.
“RESOLVED that the Republican National Committee hereby declares President Trump as our presumptive 2024 nominee for the office of President of the United States and from this moment forward moves into full general election mode welcoming supporters of all candidates as valued members of Team Trump 2024,” the draft resolution read.
The resolution indicates a readiness to collaborate with Trump as if he had already secured the necessary delegate count for nomination, despite him still needing to reach the required 1,215 delegates. As it stands, Trump leads with 32 delegates to Haley’s 17, post the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary.
Haley’s campaign spokesperson, Olivia Perez-Cubas, downplayed the proposal.
“Who cares what the RNC says?” she told Axios. “We’ll let millions of Republican voters across the country decide who should be our party’s nominee, not a bunch of Washington insiders. If Ronna McDaniel wants to be helpful she can organize a debate in South Carolina, unless she’s also worried that Trump can’t handle being on the stage for 90 minutes with Nikki Haley.”
The draft resolution was later withdrawn after Trump said that they should. On Wednesday, Trump said on Truth Social that “for the sake of PARTY UNITY, that they should NOT go forward with this plan.”
