“There’s a new Republican sheriff in town,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, as they revealed the results of a Suffolk University/USA Today poll and found that most Republican-leaning voters would prefer Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, over Donald Trump as their 2024 presidential nominee.
53% of conservative voters picked DeSantis, while 33% chose the former president, who formally launched his new campaign last month.
“DeSantis outpolls Trump not only among the general electorate, but also among these Republican-leaning voters who have been the former president’s base,” Paleologos shared. “Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump.”

The nationwide survey also showed that DeSantis is ahead of current President Joe Biden at 47% versus 43%. The remaining 7% were undecided. The results also indicate that Trump’s approval rating lags far behind Biden’s at 30% versus 46%.
But, as seen in similar polls earlier in the year, voters want new, perhaps younger blood in the White House — a majority of respondents would rather not see Biden nor Trump attempt a second term in 2024.
