Twitter Intensifies Paywall Policy: TweetDeck Now Exclusively for Twitter Blue Subscribers

Twitter has revealed that another feature of its platform, TweetDeck, will soon be available only for its paid Twitter Blue service subscribers.

This information was discreetly released in a statement regarding the launch of the revamped version of TweetDeck, a feature that lets users handle multiple Twitter accounts from a single interface. The upgraded TweetDeck now supports a range of enhanced functionalities including “full composer functionality, Spaces, video docking, polls, and more.”

The catch, however, was highlighted in a minor disclosure at the end of the statement that users will need to be verified to access TweetDeck after 30 days. Given that verification on Twitter requires a monthly subscription, TweetDeck will be off-limits to those unwilling to subscribe to Twitter Blue.

Twitter insiders informed the Verge that users will be compelled to switch to the new TweetDeck version without an option to continue using the older, now dysfunctional version, for free. This update was prompted by the removal of legacy APIs by Twitter owner Elon Musk, a move he deemed necessary to combat “data scraping.”

Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022 and the subsequent introduction of the Twitter Blue subscription service resulted in a slew of features, such as verification, text formatting, and SMS two-factor authentication, becoming paywalled. The recent implementation of a tweet view limit for non-paying users, which allows those touting the Twitter Blue status to view more tweets, has been one of the most contentious changes.
