Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Film Brings In $95 – $97 Million In Opening Weekend

Taylor Swift’s concert movie, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”, has secured its place as one of the highest-grossing concert films ever. In its opening weekend, it outshone concert films from icons like Justin Bieber and the late Michael Jackson, raking in between $95 million to $97 million in US and Canadian theaters.

AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. (NYSE: AMC), the distributor, had projected earnings ranging from $105 million to $145 million, indicating the unpredictable nature of the box office.

Shawn Robbins, the chief analyst for Boxoffice Pro, remarked, “Swift, her fans, and the theatrical exhibition industry should all be celebrating the results.”

To give perspective on Swift’s massive achievement, Bieber’s “Never Say Never” earned $29.5 million on its opening weekend in 2011, and Jackson’s “This Is It” made $23.2 million in 2009. Those films then went on to make $99 million and $261 million, respectively, during their theatre runs.

Swift’s strategy to distribute her movie through AMC, the largest theater chain, rather than a conventional studio has proved fruitful. Reports suggest Swift and AMC will pocket 57% of the box-office sales.

The anticipation around Swift’s film was palpable. Following its announcement in August, AMC witnessed a single-day record in advance ticket sales. The artist’s promotions, including surprise appearances and extensive media coverage, undeniably fueled the fervor.

The film resonated not only with die-hard fans but also critics, garnering a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Beyond tickets, fans splurged on exclusive movie merchandise, bolstering the overall economic impact.

Highlighting the power of such ventures, Beyoncé has also partnered with AMC for her forthcoming concert film, “Renaissance”, set for a December release.
