Trump Orders ‘Drone Dominance’ Days After Ukraine’s Operation Spiderweb Success

President Donald Trump signed executive orders Friday aimed at achieving “American drone dominance,” just days after Ukrainian forces demonstrated the strategic power of unmanned aircraft by destroying dozens of Russian warplanes deep inside Russia.

“Unleashing American Drone Dominance” was the title of Trump’s primary executive order, which directs the Federal Aviation Administration to acceleratethe development of American drone technologies and expand commercial operations beyond operators’ visual line of sight.

The order comes shortly after Ukraine’s spectacular June 1 operation. “Operation Spiderweb” used 117 drones smuggled into Russia and hidden in trucks with retractable roofs to strike five airbases, some located more than 2,500 miles from Ukraine’s border.

Ukrainian officials said the attack destroyed 41 Russian aircraft worth $7 billion, including strategic bombers.

The Ukrainian Security Service said the operation took 18 months to plan and was personally supervised by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine’s attack showed “a level of sophistication that they had not seen before,” a senior US defense official was quoted on CNN.

“An absolutely brilliant result. Our most long-range operation,” Zelensky wrote after the attack. “These are Ukrainian actions that will undoubtedly be in history books.”

Trump’s orders direct federal agencies to prioritize the procurement of US-made drones and remove regulatory barriers that slow the deployment of advanced drone technologies. The administration also announced plans to establish pilot programs for electric vertical takeoff aircraft and accelerate testing of autonomous drone operations.

“Drones enhance United States productivity, create high-skilled jobs, and are reshaping the future of aviation,” Trump’s executive order states, emphasizing commercial and military applications.

“With large-scale public events such as the Olympics and the World Cup on the horizon, taking action on airspace security has never been timelier,” said Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Trump’s orders establish programs to expand drone exports, streamline military procurement of US-made drones, and accelerate integration of unmanned systems into the national airspace.
