Well, well, well. How the turntables… Elon Musk may now have to make due on his promise and perhaps sell even more stock, because it appears that trolling the UN about solving world hunger may just lead sparked an initiative to avoid famine as early as next year.
David Beasley, head of the UN’s World Food Program (WFP), finally made promise on Musk’s request, and has outlined how exactly, $6.6 billion could alleviate starvation. In a document published on Monday, Beasley proposes to allocate $3.5 billion towards the purchase and direct delivery of food to those in need, as well as another $2 billion towards “cash and food vouchers (including transaction fees) in places where markets can function.”
A further $700 million would be earmarked for adapting new food programs to the specific conditions of countries in an effort to ensure the aid reaches the most vulnerable, while about $400 million would be designated for “operations management, administration and accountability,” in addition to coordinating the supply chain of the aid. In the tweet, Beasley calls on Musk— and other billionaires— to take urgent action in helping solve the hunger crisis, now that a clear plan and open books are readily available.
Beasley’s latest proposal follows a recent twitter tirade with the Tesla CEO, after the WFP director took to CNN back in October to call on ultra-wealthy billionaires including Musk and Bezos to step up “on a one-time basis” to help “42 million people that are literally going to die if we don’t reach them.” Beasley suggested that $6 billion, or 2% of Musk’s net worth would be a sufficient amount to help solve world hunger.

In response, Musk challenged the UN, saying that if the organization can prove exactly how the funds could solve the hunger crisis using open-source accounting, he will immediately sell his Tesla stock and do it. Beasley assured the Tesla CEO that the UN has systems in place for transparency— so far, the billionaire has not responded to the proposed plan. However, Musk has already offloaded a combined $8.8 billion— perhaps in anticipation that the UN might release such a set of documents— we don’t know— but nonetheless, it appears that he may now have to add ‘solve world hunger’ onto his to-do list.
