Unifor members have launched a strike against General Motors (NYSE: GM), escalating tensions over contract negotiations. The strike, involving about 4,280 autoworkers, commenced at midnight at various GM facilities, including the Oshawa Assembly Complex and the St. Catharines Powertrain Plant.
The core of the dispute revolves around GM’s alleged reluctance to align with the union’s pattern agreement, previously ratified in a collective agreement with Ford of Canada. “This strike is about General Motors stubbornly refusing to meet the pattern agreement. The company knows our members will never let GM break our pattern – not today – not ever,” expressed Unifor National President Lana Payne. Among the primary issues raised by the union are pension demands, support for retired workers, and the transition of temporary employees to full-time roles.
Unifor’s GM Master Bargaining Chair, Jason Gale, asserted the union’s position, saying, “Our bargaining team was crystal clear with the company throughout these negotiations: our members are united and ready to strike, no exceptions.” Gale emphasized the integral role of Unifor members in GM’s operations and expressed confidence in achieving favorable terms: “This dispute can only end one way: with GM agreeing to the same terms in our pattern agreement with Ford.”
