Titled the “Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025” (H.R. 1161), the bill empowers the White House “to enter into negotiations with the Government of Denmark to purchase or otherwise acquire Greenland,” citing national security benefits and the promise of adding “the freest nation on Earth” to the local population.
Alongside broad references to boosting American sovereignty, the legislation brazenly asserts that all federal maps and documents be updated to call Greenland “Red, White, and Blueland.”

The bill instructs “the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Chairman of the Board on Geographic Names, shall oversee the implementation of the renaming” of Greenland once acquired.
Critics have pointed out that Greenland, home to fewer than 60,000 people, has long expressed the desire for greater autonomy from Denmark. Locals have been largely unmoved by Washington’s overtures, and Greenlandic officials remain skeptical at best.
