US Won’t Block Mexico-Cuba Oil Despite Trump’s ‘Zero’ Threat

The United States continues to allow Mexico to supply oil to Cuba despite President Donald Trump’s public declaration Sunday that “no more oil or money” would reach the island nation.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright confirmed off-camera to CBS News that the administration has not blocked Mexican oil shipments. Cuba faces severe energy shortages after Venezuela stopped deliveries following the January 3 capture of Nicolás Maduro by US forces.

“There will be no more oil or money going to Cuba — zero,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday. “I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”

Mexico now serves as Cuba’s primary fuel source after Maduro’s arrest. US forces intercepted Venezuelan oil tankers bound for Cuba during the operation. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum calls the shipments humanitarian aid.

Trump spoke with Sheinbaum on Monday. Neither government disclosed whether oil shipments were discussed.

Cuba suffers daily blackouts lasting up to 20 hours. For decades, the island received Venezuelan oil in exchange for providing security services. The Cuban government acknowledged 32 of its military personnel died during the US operation that captured Maduro.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel rejected Trump’s pressure Monday, asserting Cuba would defend itself “to the last drop of blood.”

He said on X that no conversations with the US government exist “except for technical contacts in the migration field.”

US officials told CBS News a complete oil cutoff would shock Havana’s electrical grid but that Washington seeks to pressure Cuba to abandon its communist system rather than trigger immediate collapse. A US official confirmed Cuba has resold Venezuelan oil to China to generate cash.

Díaz-Canel said Monday that relations between the US and Cuba must advance “based on International Law rather than on hostility, threats, and economic coercion.”
