Nearly half of young adult Canadians would consider their country becoming part of the United States if offered American citizenship and financial incentives, according to an Ipsos poll released January 16.
The survey, conducted January 9-13, 2025, found that 43% of Canadians aged 18-34 would vote to join the US if guaranteed US citizenship and conversion of their assets to US dollars. This stands in sharp contrast to those 55 and older, where only 17% would consider such a proposal.
The poll comes amid recent comments by Donald Trump about Canada becoming America’s 51st state. While 78% of respondents said Trump’s remarks strengthened their Canadian pride, younger citizens expressed significant concerns about their nation’s future sovereignty.
Among Canadians 18-34, 65% believe their country’s independence is in “serious jeopardy,” compared to just 35% of those over 55. Nearly one-third of young adults view an eventual US-Canada merger as inevitable, while only 11% of older Canadians share this belief.

The survey also revealed broader anxieties about Canadian unity, with 27% of respondents predicting Quebec, Alberta, or both will separate from Canada within the next decade. If such separations occurred, 22% would support their own province joining the US.
Despite the generational differences, a strong majority of Canadians (80%) maintain they would never vote for their country to become part of the US — although this sentiment is notably weaker among younger respondents.
The online poll surveyed 1,000 Canadian adults and has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

I gave up my American citizenship when I became Canadian. I love Canada. I would literally kill myself than become an American again.
