BREAKING: Puerto Vallarta Airport Closed Amid Security Crisis in Jalisco, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta’s international airport has been temporarily closed following a federal security operation in the state of Jalisco that triggered clashes, vehicle burnings and road blockages across several areas on February 22, 2026.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro confirmed on X that federal forces carried out an operation in Tapalpa that led to confrontations in the region. He stated that individuals subsequently burned and blocked vehicles in multiple parts of Jalisco in an apparent attempt to hinder authorities.

“I have instructed the immediate establishment of the security coordination table with authorities from all three levels of government and activated red code to prevent acts against the population,” the Governor wrote. He later confirmed he is personally leading the Security Table, which remains in permanent session.

Road Closures and Local Disruptions

The security operation had an immediate impact on mobility in Puerto Vallarta. According to community safety notices distributed by condominium administrations and landlords to owners and guests, the Libramiento area and Highway 200 toward the south zone were reported blocked, affecting travel throughout the city. Residents reported visible smoke in certain sectors.

The notice advised:

  • Remain inside residences where possible
  • Avoid unnecessary travel until the situation stabilizes
  • Expect possible temporary limitations to building services or amenities
  • Anticipate that some staff may be unable to report to work due to mobility disruptions

Several Airbnb hosts and residential property managers circulated similar advisories to tourists, urging guests to stay calm, remain indoors and monitor official updates while authorities work to restore normal conditions.

Air Canada Suspends Operations

Air Canada announced it has temporarily suspended operations to Puerto Vallarta due to the ongoing security situation impacting the airport.

Canadian Government Advisory

The Government of Canada currently advises Canadians travelling to Mexico to exercise a high degree of caution due to crime and security issues. The advisory specifically notes: “There have been shootouts with security forces and explosions. A shelter in place order is in effect in Puerto Vallarta. All taxi and rideshare services are suspended until further notice.”

At the time of publication, authorities have not provided a detailed timeline for full reopening of affected roadways or confirmed when airport operations will return to normal. Investigations remain ongoing.
