DeSantis’ Approval Rating Falls, Support Remains Stagnant After Campaign Launch

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis saw a significant decline in his approval rating just two weeks after announcing his bid for the 2024 presidential election.

The online polling company Civiqs has revealed that DeSantis currently holds a net approval rating of 64% from Republican respondents compared to his peak of 86% shortly after he was reelected in November last year.

His overall approval rating is a dire negative 19 points, with a majority, or 55% of respondents, expressing their disapproval, and only 36% holding a favorable view of the Republican governor.

Notably and not surprisingly, the data indicates that DeSantis is facing major unfavorable ratings from several demographic groups, including individuals aged 18-34 (63%), women (62%), African Americans (85%), and the Hispanic/Latino population (68%).

This decline in approval comes in contrast to DeSantis’ ratings in early December when his overall approval and disapproval ratings were tied at 47%. At that time, there were growing suggestions within the Republican Party that DeSantis should lead the GOP in 2024, following criticisms of former President Donald Trump for the party’s poor performance in the midterm elections.

Various polls indicate that Trump remains the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024, despite facing a number of legal challenges, including pleading not guilty to 34 felony counts in New York and being found liable in a civil trial for alleged sexual abuse. His net approval rating among Civiqs’ Republican respondents stands at 65%, a percentage point higher than DeSantis.

A poll released by Morning Consult on June 6 gave Trump a commanding 34-point lead over the Florida Governor (56-22%).

The same survey found that support for the presidential campaign of the Florida governor remains stagnant, barely budging even after he made the “top story on Earth” campaign announcement on Twitter last month.

There’s a long way still to 2024, and there’s plenty that can still happen. Morning Consult found that 47% of primary voters whose first choice is Trump picked DeSantis as their number two.
