Enbridge’s $4 Billion Sunrise Expansion Gains Federal Approval for B.C. Pipeline Boost

Enbridge (TSX: ENB) has secured federal approval for its $4 billion Sunrise Expansion Program, a major upgrade to the Westcoast pipeline system in British Columbia that will add 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas transportation capacity. The project, deemed in the public interest by the Canadian government, marks a significant step toward bolstering energy security in the region.

Set to begin construction in July 2026 with a targeted in-service date in late 2028, the Sunrise Expansion will support local energy use across B.C. It will also fuel electric power generation, industrial growth, and global LNG exports, including facilities like Woodfibre LNG, billed as the world’s first net-zero LNG plant. The project involves building 139 kilometers of new pipeline through 11 looping segments parallel to the existing system, alongside additional compression and facility upgrades.

Economically, the initiative is expected to inject over $3 billion into Canada’s GDP and generate more than $700 million in federal and provincial tax revenue. During peak construction, it will employ around 2,500 workers, with a focus on local and Indigenous community involvement. Enbridge has already spent over $52 million on hiring and services from Indigenous businesses for the project.

“The multi-billion dollar Sunrise Expansion Program is a shovel-ready, critical natural gas infrastructure project that supports the advancement of Canada’s energy superpower ambitions,” said Greg Ebel, Enbridge’s CEO and President.

The project also aligns with Canada’s trade diversification strategy by enhancing natural gas supply to Asian markets. Federal and provincial leaders emphasized its role in powering B.C.’s industrial sector and strengthening supply chains through the use of Canadian steel from InterPro Pipe + Steel for the pipeline.

Approval came with 47 binding conditions from the Canada Energy Regulator, covering environmental protection, safety, and Indigenous engagement. This balance reflects Ottawa’s push to advance major energy projects while upholding rigorous standards.

British Columbia Premier David Eby hailed the decision as a boost for local jobs and a driver of economic independence. “At a time of uncertainty and global instability, this is how we create the prosperity needed to pay for the public services that make us all better off,” he said.

The Sunrise Expansion positions Enbridge to meet rising demand as B.C. brings major industrial projects online. With construction costs pegged at $4 billion, the project’s completion by late 2028 could reshape natural gas access in the province for decades.
