NDP Candidate Withdraws From Ontario Provincial Election Race To Avoid Vote Split

Natasha Doyle-Merrick, the New Democratic Party candidate for Eglinton-Lawrence, announced her withdrawal from the upcoming Ontario provincial election in a statement released on Thursday.

Doyle-Merrick, a resident of the Lawrence Heights community, said that she initially ran to amplify the voices of her constituents, whom she felt were being ignored by political leaders. However, after reflection, she decided to step down, saying that it would be a disservice to keep her name on the ballot when many residents cannot afford another four years under the Ontario Conservative government.

In her statement, Doyle-Merrick criticized the past seven years under Premier Doug Ford and the Ontario Conservatives as being “absent and ineffective,” showing little interest in supporting Eglinton-Lawrence residents. She emphasized that the election has become a two-party contest between the Ontario Liberals and Conservatives.

“I got into politics for the people, and it would be a disservice for me to keep my name on the ballot knowing that the race in Eglinton-Lawrence is pivotal,” Doyle-Merrick said, adding that many residents cannot afford another four years of Conservative governance.

Ontario’s provincial election is set to take place on February 27.
